通常的基金不会有估值一说的，可以估值的一般是指数，而复制指数的基金，叫做指数基金，就可以利用指数的估值，来等同于指数基金的估值，这样，指数基金就可以被我们感知到它的估值了。
为什么一般的基金无法直接估值
因为基金的种类千差万别，有货币型、型、混合型、股票型，而上面说的指数基金，其实是股票型基金的一个特殊品种，只有忠实跟踪指数的指数型基金，才能利用指数的估值进行估值投资。
其他类型的基金，由于是基金经理决定投资组合的调整的，而组合的具体内容，要一个季度才公布一次，日常是不知道调整了没有，所以无法准确估值。
而指数基金跟踪的指数，通常是半年调整一次，调整日没到，指数的成分股和比例是不会变的，这种稳定性和透明性就为估值指数提供了可能。

指数基金是一个股票的组合，根据不同的指数类型，有规模指数，有行业指数，还有主题指数等等，不管怎么说，指数基金是一类股票指数的综合体，它的走势反映这类股票组合的综合走势。所以它比单只个股的走势要来得相对平缓一点。而且指数在纳入成分股之前，是先订好编制规则的，一般指数对成分股的要求，通常要剔除一些业绩不好的股票，市值太小的股票，或者成交量过低的股票，总之会把一些不是很好很适合的股票先剔除，如果半年调整期内出现了不符合指数标准的成分股，调整期一到，也会把它踢走。长期下来，就保证了指数成分股的相对健康性。
这些好处，是普通散户在投资个股时难以顾及到的，即使有时也会去看看股票的质地，但能做到定期去检查，还是比较难的。况且个股的涨跌幅比指数来得总体要大，大起大落对个股来说很常见，指数相对平缓很多。
因此，对绝大部分散户投资者来说，低估区做指数基金的定投，要远好于买入单只股票。
